What is a moving average crossover?

A crossover of two or more moving averages (MA) is one of the most popular technical analysis methods. A signal occurs when a fast MA crosses a slow MA. The crossover direction indicates a shift in short‑term or long‑term momentum. Our screener tracks 6 key types of such crossovers in real time.

1. Golden Cross

Bullish signal. SMA 50 (fast) crosses SMA 200 (slow) from below to above. Often occurs after a prolonged downtrend and is considered one of the most reliable indicators of a bullish market start. Confirmed by rising volume.

2. Death Cross

Bearish signal. SMA 50 crosses SMA 200 from above to below. Warns of a possible prolonged decline. Often seen ahead of deep corrections or a trend reversal to the downside.

3. Price Breakout (SMA 200 Breakout)

Impulse signal. The current candle closes above (or below) the SMA 200, breaking this key level. Indicates a strong acceleration of the move and a possible exit from the range.

4. MACD Zero Cross

Trend confirmation. The main MACD line crosses the zero level. Moving into positive territory confirms a bullish trend, into negative – a bearish one. Used for medium‑term decisions.

5. Scalping (EMA 9/21)

Short‑term signal. Crossover of exponential moving averages EMA 9 and EMA 21. Provides early entries for scalping and intraday trading. Sensitive to noise, therefore requires additional filtering.

6. Bill Williams Alligator (5/8/13)

Alligator system signal. Simultaneous crossover of three smoothed moving averages (jaw, teeth, lips). When the lines are intertwined – the market is “sleeping”; their divergence indicates the start of a trend move. The signal is considered strong when all three averages move in sync.

How does the MTF filter work?

All signals are automatically checked against the trend of the higher timeframe (MTF). This filters out false signals against the global move. In the table you see the status:

• 🟩 Confirmed – the signal matches the trend on a higher TF (e.g., BUY on H1 with an uptrend on D1). The most reliable setup.
• 🟥 Counter-trend – signal is against the higher timeframe trend. Suitable only for aggressive short‑term trades with very tight stop‑loss.

The filter is based on comparing price with EMA 200 (or 50 for the weekly TF) on the H1, H4, D1, or W1 chart depending on the base timeframe.
